If you like the technical side, verify it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools while filling things in and watch the Network tab – not a single request leaves your device. What is never sent can never be stolen, leaked or sold.

Honest answers

Where is my data stored — really?

On your device, nowhere else. While you fill things in, your details live directly in your browser on your device; on export they become a file strongly encrypted (AES-256) with your passphrase. There is no server where anything would be stored. Backups are up to you — on a USB stick, your NAS or your own cloud.

What if I forget my passphrase?

Then the file cannot be recovered — by anyone, not even by us. That's the flip side of real encryption: there is no spare key, and we'd rather say so plainly than hide it. Our advice: write the passphrase down on paper and keep it wherever your printed dossier lives. Whoever knows the hiding place should find both when it matters anyway.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

Neither. beizeiten works without registration, and after the first load the app runs fully offline. There is no login, no email address you'd have to leave behind, and no newsletter to unsubscribe from.

What's free, and what costs money?

The “People who matter” area and the emergency card for your wallet are free — no sign-up, no payment details. The one-time purchase unlocks all ten life areas, including the print-ready dossier and the encrypted export. After that, beizeiten is yours for good, all updates included.

Does beizeiten replace a will?

No. beizeiten is not a legal product and does not replace a will (Testament) or advice from a notary. It organises everything around it: where documents are, who should be informed, which logins, contracts and wishes exist. For legally binding arrangements, see a notary or a qualified professional — your dossier is the best possible preparation for that.

What happens if beizeiten no longer exists one day?

Your preparedness doesn't depend on us. The app keeps running locally on your device, and your encrypted file and printed dossier stay usable. beizeiten is deliberately built with open, widely used web technology — so your binder outlasts any company.

How do my loved ones get to the information when it matters?

However you decide. For example: you print the dossier and keep it in a trusted place; the emergency card in your wallet points the way there. You can also hand the encrypted file to someone you trust — and share the passphrase separately, or keep it with the printed dossier.

Who is beizeiten for — and can I give it as a gift?

For everyone juggling children, parents and work who finally wants this off their plate. And yes: Duo (two licences) and Family (four licences) are a good way to give your partner or your own parents a nudge — filling it in together is often the best way to start the conversation.

How long does it take to fill in?

As long as you like. You don't have to do it in one sitting: the interview remembers your progress locally; you can stop after any question and pick up later. A good starting point is the free “People who matter” area — take on the remaining areas bit by bit.

Which devices does beizeiten run on?

In any modern browser — on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, no installation needed. You can also install beizeiten like an app: in your browser menu, tap “Install app” or “Add to Home Screen”. beizeiten then opens with its own icon like a regular app — even entirely without internet. Your data stays on the device you work with; the exported, encrypted file lets you take your dossier to another device when you need to.

Is beizeiten an emergency binder or a legacy binder?

Both, in the practical sense: beizeiten guides you through everything an emergency binder or legacy binder should contain, from powers of attorney and accounts to your personal wishes, and turns it into a printable dossier for your family. Legal documents such as advance directives are still drawn up separately; beizeiten records where they are kept. Your binder stays up to date, and only on your device.
